RE For All Statement

In November 2020, schools in both Nottinghamshire and the city of Nottingham were issued with the Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education, ‘RE for All’ 2021-2026.

Through the use of the Syllabus, we use RE to enable our pupils to gain insight, knowledge and cultural capital to equip them as responsible members in our society. The Syllabus we follow encourages pupils to discover more about religion and worldviews on a range of topics and appreciate different ways of life within communities. This RE Curriculum promotes social understanding of their own communities locally, nationally and globally, understanding differences and similarities within communities and investigating belonging. This gives children the skills to eventually develop their own ideas and take ownership of the facts they have learnt. Children are encouraged to express ideas and insights into key questions, which face all human beings as we travel through life, fostering respect, freedom and developing a moral compass. Through Primary, children will take part in in-school lessons, visits and trips (including trips to places of worship).

The three aims of RE in Nottinghamshire will ensure that our pupils:

1. Know and understand a range of religions and world views which will allow them to recognise the diversity which exists in our society.

2. Can express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and the impact of religions and worldviews as they develop their own personal views on a range of issues.

3. Develop and use skills, which will assist them to engage seriously with religions and worldviews.

By following the Agreed Syllabus, RE will contribute to a whole range of school priorities. Their study will promote spiritual, cultural, social and moral development, as well as enabling them to consider British Values such as tolerance and respect for others who hold different world views. Religious Education will also promote our school values and staff make links where appropriate.

If you would like to know more about the Nottinghamshire and Nottingham City Agreed Syllabus a copy is available for you to read in the school.

Withdrawal from all or part of Religious Education

We are committed to an inclusive Religious Education and always hope that no parent/carer will wish to withdraw their children from all or part of the subject. Nevertheless, it remains the right of parents/carers to withdraw their children from RE (and/or collective worship) if they wish to. To exercise this right, parents are asked to contact/write to the Head Teacher informing them of the desire to have their child/children withdrawn from all or parts of RE. The Head Teacher can discuss any concerns (although no reasons have to be given for withdrawal or judgements made), clarify the nature of RE provided by the school and look at options available to the parents. If parents wish to withdraw their children from RE lessons or any part of the RE curriculum, the school has a duty to supervise them. Where the pupil has been withdrawn, alternative arrangements are to be made for RE of the kind the parents want the pupil to receive. These arrangements will be made by the parents - the school is not expected to make these arrangements. It must be noted that the children MUST do RE. They cannot do any other curriculum subjects whilst their peers are undergoing RE session.
