# What are we learning this week?

Maths: we are moving on to complex partitioning.

English: we are writing a setting description based on ' The Bee Movie '.

Topic: we are investigating a bee life cycle !

Maths: we will be revisiting number bonds, looking at bonds to and within 20.

English: we are continuing our 2 week narrative on Never tickle a tiger!

Topic: we will be finding out some interesting facts about butterflies and looking at what makes habitats suitable for different mini beasts...!

Maths: We will be learning about position and direction - focusing on 1/4, 1/2/ 3/4 and full turns. We will also be finding out the difference between clockwise and anti-clockwise.

English: In English, we'll start a two week narrative based on the story 'Never tickle a tarantula'.

Topic: We will be finding out how different mini beasts survive!

Maths: We are continuing with measurements, looking at weight, length and capacity.

English: We will be writing flower fact files.

Topic: We will be creating some flower art and completing a flower hunt!

Maths- we will be moving on to our measurements unit.

English: we are writing a persuasive letter about the importance of having flowers around Pleasley.

Topic: we'll be investigating how plants pollinate and will also be creating some flower art!

Maths - we will continue using formal subtraction methods and using these methods to solve word problems and inverse calculations.

English - we're continuing our 2 week Jack and the beanstalk narrative.

Topic - we'll be finding out about the different parts of a plant and also checking up on our seeds from week 1!

Maths: We will start to use a formal method for subtracting 2 two-digit numbers.

English: We are starting a 2 week unit on Jack and the beanstalk!

Topic: we are comparing plants from around the world and going on a flower hunt!

English: In English, we'll be writing our perfect polished pieces and writing a postcard to a famous pirate!

Topic: We'll be exploring the oceans and investigating how ice melts to reveal some secret treasure...

English: We are going to be writing a poem about a storm at sea!

Topic: As well as an e-safety refresher, children will be finding out how people stay safe at sea and also learning how to give directions using compass point...

English: We will continue our original narratives based on The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch.

Topic: We'll be making block work art of pirate ships and learning about a famous lighthouse keeper!

4 groups of 2 = 8

English: In English, we'll be reading The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch and start writing our own narrative!

Topic: We will be making our own lighthouses . We will also be looking at similarities and differences between UK and other countries around the world!

Maths: We will begin to look at the relationship between multiplication and repeated addition.

English: We are reading 'The Pirates Next Door' and will be writing a description on a character from the book.

Topic: We'll be using our observational skills to draw a detailed pirate boat and we'll be going on a real pirate adventure with PartTake Theatre company!

7.1.19 HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Maths: We'll be telling the time with analogue clocks. In Year 2, children are expected to tell the time at: o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to the hour.

English: To help some pirate friends, we'll be creating a potion and writing a recipe!

Topic: We'll be making moving ship mechanisms and exploring the oceans of the world

Pirate party: Wednesday 9th January. Children are invited to come in to school in costume or own red/white or black clothes!

** Thursday 6th December - Our Christmas Nativity**

** 2pm and 4pm **

Maths: We'll be moving on to subtraction through concrete and pictorial representations.

English: We will be writing an advert to sell a house!

Topic: In topic, we'll be looking at ways to help keep our community clean and we'll also be taking a walk and observing the amount of traffic in our local area.

Maths: We are solving addition problems using column method.

English: In English, Year 2 will continue to make up their 'A Walk In Pleasley' narratives. We'll also be writing a letter to the council...!

Topic: In topic, we'll be creating some artwork based around Pleasley Pit.

## This is the method that Year 2 use to add two digit numbers together. If there are more than 10 ones, we change the ones for a group of ten. This is the first step towards exchanging with the column addition method.

19.11.18

Maths: We are moving on to adding two two-digit numbers using a formal method. Children are expected to exchange ones for tens through exchanging.

English: As well as writing a perfect polished piece for the Jolly Postman, we'll be moving on to 'A Walk In London' book and adapting it to write our very own 'A Walk In Pleasley' narrative !

Topic: In topic we'll be visiting our local area (Monday 19th) to look at the features and making a tally chart. With the data that we collect, we will make graphs on Excel.

English: In English, we're writing instructions for a Jolly Postman!

Topic: We'll be looking at the difference between human and physical features in our local area.

English: This week we are going to be writing a description of an old photograph taken in Mansfield.

Topic: We're going to take a walk around Pleasley and spot some human features!

English: We're going to write an information page on the features of a castle...look out for our information pages at our class museum!

Topic: In topic, we're going to start painting our model castles and we'll be learning about an important person from the past that created some famous structures.

English: We're reading Billy Goat Gruff and writing a letter of complaint to the goats!

Topic: In topic, we will be going on a local walk around Pleasley, researching the different jobs in a castle and carrying on making our 3D model castles.

Maths: We will be moving on to comparing and ordering numbers. We'll be looking at using greater than and less than signs    >     <

English: We'll be reading The Tunnel and writing a setting description.

Topic: As well as our local walk around Pleasley, we'll be researching about tunneling animals.

English: We will be writing our recount about Bolsover Castle.

Topic: We're going on a visit to BOLSOVER CASTLE! We'll be exploring traditional features of a castle...

Maths: We will be starting with looking at the place value of numbers up to 100.

English: In English, we are going to retell the traditional tale, Rapunzel!

Topic: We will research the protective features of castles, look back at castles through time and start to design our own castle models!
