What We Are Learning in Y1

Week beginning 20th June

English - We are reading the story 'Beegu' and writing a character profile about her.

 

Phonics - We are looking at contractions this week.

 

Maths - We will start looking at fractions; first finding half of shapes and then half of numbers.

 

Topic - We will learn about Neil Armstrong and make a clay model of Beegu.

Week beginning 16th May 2016

English - We will receive an important letter tomorrow! It will lead up to writing a newpaper report. We are also covering the prefix un-.

 

Phonics - We will continue to revise all the sounds we have learnt (Phase 3 and 5) and look at compound words.

 

Maths - We will continue with learning about money. This week we will adding coins together and doing simple change addition and subtractions.

 

Topic - We will make our bird food, make animal masks and make some african art work.

Week beginning 9th May 2016

English - We will be thinking about what it would be like to be a zoo keeper! We will write a set of instructions to become a good zoo keeper. We will also be writing a recount about our visit to Yorkshire Wildlife Park!

 

Phonics - We will continue to revise all the sounds we have learnt (Phase 3 and 5) and look at compound words.

 

Maths - We will move onto money for 2 weeks. Please look and money with your children so they begin to learn its value! 

 

Topic - Obviously the most exciting thing this week is our trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park! We will also continue with our tiger food can designs and design our own zoo.

Week beginning 2nd May 2016

English - This week we will be reading 'The Tiger that came to tea'. We will be sequencing the story, interviewing Sophie and then writing a diary entry as Sophie about the day.

 

Phonics - We will continue to revise all the sounds we have learnt (Phase 3 and 5) and learn about contractions.

 

Maths - We will be refreshing 2-d shapes and then move onto 3-d shapes.

 

Topic - We will be looking at big cats across the world and designing our own brand of tiger food.

Week beginning 25th April 2016

English - This week we will be focussing on Fables. We will read Aesop's 'The Tortoise and The Hare' and use this as inspiration for our own fable. Please remember the writing meetings on Wednesday at 3.30pm and 5pm!

 

Phonics - We will continue to revise all the sounds we have learnt (Phase 3 and 5) and focus on /or/ sounds and spellings.

 

Maths - Last week we started using place value charts to help us with addition. We will continue on with this this week.

 

Topic - We will be having a butterfly hunt, making bird food and looking at animal patterns.

Week beginning 18th April 2016

English - To kick start our new topic 'Paws, Claws and Whiskers', we will have a very special visitor. We will then write about this visit. Our SPaG focus is adding 's' to make nouns plural.

 

Phonics - As you know, this term is the Phonics term! We will revise all the sounds we have learnt (Phase 3 and 5) and learn the new sounds /wh/ (silent h) and /ph/ (f). 

 

Maths - We are continuing with number. We will look at numbers between 30 and 40, look at their place value and move onto addition to 40.

 

Topic - Following on from our visit we will be doing some animal inspired art and creating pet pictograms.

Week beginning 21st March 2016

English - This week we are focussing on narrative and using the film 'Up' to base a short story. We will be imagining we have been floated to a new place via a balloon. Our SPaG focus this week will conjunctions.

 

Phonics - We will look at different spellings for /or/ - aw, oar, ore and au.

 

Maths - We will continue at looking at numbers to 30 including simple addition and subtraction. We will also look at odd and even numbers.

 

Topic - In topic we will be investigating shadows and measuring any rainfall!

Week beginning 14th March 2016

English - Our weather focus this week is the sun and hot weather. Our SPaG focus this week is adding the suffix ed to verbs to make them past tense. We will also be writing postcards.

 

Phonics - We will look at different spellings for /ur/ - ir and er and /oi/ to oy. Remember there is a phonics meeting after school on Tuesday. Please try and make it if you can.

 

Maths - This week we will look at numbers up to 40. We will begin by looking at numbers between 20-30, understanding their place value and identifying one more and one less. We will also be continuing with number bonds to 20 so please keep practising these with your child. The times table test this week is on the 2 times table.

 

Topic - In topic we will be looking at the different seasons and making some season art.

Week beginning 7th March 2016

English - Our weather focus this week is clouds. We will be thinking of adjectives to describe different types of weather and then using the short film 'Cloud Maker' to inspire some narrative work.

 

Phonics - We will look at different spellings for numerous phonemes - ea for /e/, ou for /ow/ and o for /u/. 

 

Maths - This week we are returning to number. We will be refreshing our number bonds to 20 and then moving onto numbers to 40. We will be looking at the place value of numbers to 40 as well as looking at one more and one less.

 

Topic - In topic we will be making our own cloud art and making a cloud in a jar!

Week beginning 29th February 2016

English - We will start the week by looking at lists. We will have a go at writing Miss Lowe a shopping list using bullet points and commas. On Wednesday we will make our Summer Sandwich and then write a set of instructions.

 

Phonics - We will look at the phoneme /oo/ and /(y)oo/ and learn the new spelling of ew. We will end the week by looking at the trigraph /ear/ and learning the new spelling of eer.

 

Maths - Like English, this week we are looking at instructions. We will be learning forwards, backwards, left and right. We will also look at turning the whole way, half way and quarter way. We will hopefully end the week by programming Beebots!

 

Topic - In topic we will be continue to watch a weather report daily. We will be investigating the different seasons and learning about Sir Francis Beaufort. We also have Shakespeare's Day on Thursday - remember your fancy dress!

Week beginning 22nd February 2016

English - We will start our new topic by looking at some poetry about the wind. We will then have a go at writing our own poem. We will also be reading 'Alfie Weather' by Shirley Hughes.

 

Phonics - We will revise the spellings we already know for the sound /oa/ and learning the new spellings of ow and o.

 

Maths - We will start our measurement topic by looking at length. We will be learning the vocabulary of short, shorter, shortest, tall, taller, tallest, long, longer and longest. We will also be looking at non-standard measurements.

 

Topic - In topic we will be watching a weather report daily and making our own weather chart. This week we are looking at the wind and will be making paper windmills to test outside. Finally we will begin some weather art by looking at 'Tiger in a Tropical Storm' by Henri Rousseau.

Week beginning 8.2.16

English - In our final week we will be writing letters back to Dylan the Dinosaur.

 

Phonics - We will be revising all the new spellings for /ai/ and /ee/ and looking at contractions.

 

Maths - We will continue with looking at place value of 2-digit numbers.

 

Topic - Our Parents' Event is Wednesday 10th February at 2.30pm in the hall. Please come and join us to see our learning!

Week beginning 1.2.16

English - This week we will be writing our stories that we mapped last week.

 

Phonics - We will be revising all the new spellings for /ai/ and /ee/.

 

Maths - We will be focussing on place value of 2-digit numbers.

 

Topic - This week we are preparing for our class event by finishing our bone art and making a 3D dinosaur.

Week beginning 25.01.16

English - We are now moving onto a narrative focus. This week we are reading 'The Tiger that came for tea' and changing the story to fit our topic. We are also going to be making story maps, invitations and menus. 

 

Phonics - This week we are learning the alternative spellings for /ee/ (e_e, ea, ie, y and ey).

 

Maths - We are learning our number bonds to 20.

 

Topic - We are looking at dinosaur teeth and making a 3D dinosaur. 

Week beginning 18.01.16

English - This week we are focusing on dinosaur riddles and learning a dinosaur poem. On Thursday Dinosaur Graham will be coming to see us so we will also be writing about his visit.

 

Phonics - This week we are learning the alternative spellings for /ai/ (a_e, ay, ey and eigh).

 

Maths - We are continuing with subtraction to 20.

 

Topic - We are learning about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores and making dinosaur teeth.

Week beginning 11.01.16

English - We will be looking at the features of non-fiction texts and writing our own non-fiction booklet about dinosaurs.

 

Phonics - This week we are starting Phase 5 and learning the vowel digraphs ie, oe and ue + split digraphs (a_e, e_e, i_e, o_e, u_e).

 

Maths - We will be looking at the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction.

 

Topic - We will be learning about Mary Anning and making fossil art.

Week beginning 5.01.16

English - We will be talking about our new topic 'Dinosaur Planet' and writing a recount about our discovery of the dinosaur eggs.

 

Phonics - This week we are looking at verbs, the suffix -ed and irregular verbs.

 

Maths - We will be recapping on number bonds to 10 before moving onto number bonds to 20.

 

Topic - We will be looking at different animal groups and investigating fossils.

Week beginning 30th November 2015

 

English - this week we are using the film 'Toy Story' to write descriptions and to think about what our own toys might do when we aren't there.

 

Maths - we are looking at 2-d shapes and their properties.

 

Topic - we will be continuing to practise our Christmas production and making a class selfie collage.

 

Phonics - we will be learning about the diagraph 'er' and adding the suffix -ing. 

 

 

Week beginning 23.11.15

 

English - this week we will be looking at our daily routines and writing diary entries.

 

Maths - we will be learning to tell the time to the hour and half past the hour.

 

Topic - the children will be practising for the Christmas production, looking at different families and making their own family portrait.

 

Phonics - we will be learning the diagraphs 'oi' and 'ow' and the triagraphs 'ear' and 'ure'.
