What we are learning

Wow! What amazing SATs results- we are all extremely proud of the children and I hope that they are proud of themselves. They have all achieved fantastic results- well done all!

In Maths, we will be looking at word problems involving money. We will also be recapping on using the four written methods and will be looking again at algebra. 

 

In English, we will be documenting Charles Darwin's discoveries. 

 

In Topic, we will be looking at the different countries that Darwin visited and their climates. We will also be doing RE and a Science investigation.

SPORTS DAY IS ON MONDAY AFTERNOON (11TH JUNE) 

 

In English this week, we will be describing new-found animals and/or the evolution of different animals. 

 

In Maths, we will be looking at area and perimeter and how different shapes can have the same perimeters and areas. We will also recap on measures. 

 

In Topic, we will be holding French days and we will be looking at Darwin's journey across the world, identifying countries and comparing them to the UK.

Week beginning- 4th June- Monday is an INSET day. SPORTS day is on MONDAY 11TH JUNE. 

 

Tuesday is UNICEF day- where we will be taking part in a sporting activity with Gordon and we will also be exploring the rights of children around the world. 

 

In Maths, we will be using calculations to problem solve. 

 

In English, we will be describing some of the creatures that Darwin saw and we will be looking at using a range of punctuation within these sentences. 

 

In Topic, we will look at some fossils and begin our journey into the life and discoveries of Charles Darwin.

 

We have a Sports Day practice on Friday and so all children will need their PE kits. All of the children will be expected to take part in at least one race. We always make sure that the children compete in at least one race that they really want to take part in. 

Week beginning- 14th May SATs week 

 

There are no booster sessions this week. The SATs tests take place this week- please see the timetable on our class page. 

 

Encourage the children to have a rest, relax and revise for some of the time.

 

Please make sure that they have eaten breakfast before they come to school and that they have a water bottle and a snack. Breakfast Club is free for all Y6 children next week. In previous years, the children have enjoyed attending Breakfast Club, as it gives them chance to relax and be with their friends before they start the tests.

Week beginning- 7th May- I hope that everyone is enjoying the gorgeous weather this bank holiday! 

Thank you to everyone who attended our DARE graduation- it was lovely to see everyone. We were very proud of the children as they did an amazing job in showcasing what they had learned. 

 

This week, we will be completing Maths, English, Reading and Grammar every day, as SATs begin next Monday (14th). We held a practice SATs week last week and we were very proud of the scores they have achieved. I know that they all want to do as well as they can and I know that they are determined to improve their scores on the actual tests. 

 

Maths boosters will take place on Tuesday 8th May and English boosters will take place on Thursday- these will be the last booster sessions. Well done to everyone who has attended the sessions. They have really helped to consolidate knowledge. 

 

 

Week beginning- 23-4-18- Please return your DARE letters this week. If you would like a t-shirt, please send the order form and payment into school, as we have to let Mr Vincent know the order by Wednesday. 

 

Boosters are on as normal. 

 

In Maths, we will be looking at interpreting data from bar charts and pie charts, as well as looking at ratio and arithmetic methods (specifically answering fraction questions). 

 

In English, we will be looking at examples of writing at the National Standard and at Greater Depth. We will be looking at using a range of punctuation, including punctuating direct speech correctly. 

 

In Grammar, we will be doing a 10 minute test every day. We will also be looking at word families. 

 

In Science, we will be looking at vertebrates, invertebrates and plants. 

Week beginning- 16th April- Welcome back everyone! I hope you have all had a lovely holiday :-) 

 

Booster classes are running as normal- the children will receive a letter including all the information on the first Monday back. 

 

Calling all Y6- please bring in your home-learning this week, as we will be giving out Dojos and going through it later on in the week. 

 

In English, we will be looking at formal language and writing a discussion text about the Nature vs Nurture debate. In Spelling, we are looking at changing words to plurals and adding 'er' and 'est'. 

 

In Maths, we will be looking at coordinates, translating shape, reflecting shape, symmetry, reading information from line graphs, bar charts and pie charts. We will also continue to apply written methods and continue to develop our arithmetic skills. 

 

In Topic, we will be looking at life cycles and discussing the Nature vs Nurture debate. 

 

We have a very busy week ahead of us!  

Week beginning - 19th March- LEA GREEN RESIDENTIAL 

 

I am really looking forward to the residential next week. Make sure to pack plenty of clothes and wrap up warm!! The children who remain at school, will join with the Year 5 children and will have a fantastic time too!  

 

Throughout the week, we will be completing daily physical challenges in support of Sport Relief, which takes place on Friday 23rd March. These challenges will happen both at school and at Lea Green.

 

On FRIDAY 23rd MARCH, the children need to come to school dressed in their sports clothes, with a £1 donation (or normal school uniform). However, all the children will take part in a mile run (at some point on this day and so if the children have not come to school in their sports clothes with a donation, then they will be expected to put on their PE kits for the run). Thank you for supporting this cause. 

 

On Thursday and Friday, we will resume our SATs preparation and boosters WILL be held on Thursday 22nd March. 

Week beginning- 12th March- Please join us for a parent meeting about SATs on Thursday, straight after boosters, where we will be looking at past SATs papers and discussing the SATs week. If you already attended a meeting about SATs, then it will be similar and I can discuss SATs with parents at the parent meetings, which are scheduled for the last week of this half term. 

Please return your slip asap, as times will be given out on Friday of this week and I would like to try, where possible, to accommodate the times people need. Thank you  

 

In Maths, we will be looking at nets of 3D shape and solving word problems through reasoning. 

 

In English, we will be looking at pronouns and the use of commas to clarify meaning. Our Big Write will be a non-fiction piece on ID. 

 

In Topic, we will be looking at genetics.

Week beginning- 5th February- It is our trip on Tuesday (6th) so please make sure that you have brought back your consent form and contribution. The children need to wear school uniform and will need a snack, as we will have a short break before arriving at The Glazey Place, but then lunch will be provided by Chiquito.

This week, it is also Safer Internet Day and we have already completed some activities with the children about how to stay safe online and what they can do if they are worried about anything. Please ask your child about this.

In English, we will be preparing and planning our own Mayan stories. We will be looking at a range of grammatical terms and their definitions.

In Maths, we are continuing to look at fractions. We will be finding fractions of amounts, multiplying and dividing fractions by fractions and by whole numbers. 

 

In English, we will be writing a chapter that could be included in the book 'Holes'. We may also watch parts of the film (which is a PG) and so if that is a problem, please let me know :-) 

 

In Topic, we will be using grid references to find countries. We will also look at the physical and human characteristics of Mexico. We will also look at the Mayan people and their beliefs.

Welcome back everyone! I hope that everyone had a fantastic Christmas. I am very impressed with the start to the term and I know that this is going to continue, as we go through this term. 

 

Week beginning- 15-1-18. This week we will be looking at... 

 

In Maths- fractions focus. We will be finding fractions of shapes and amounts, exploring equivalent fractions. adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers.

 

In English- punctuation focus. We will be exploring how to use a range of punctuation marks and how to make conscious decisions about where to use them. 

 

In Science, we will be looking at the characteristics of materials. 

 

In Topic, we will be researching and designing our own Mexican tile and investigating the Mayan temples.

Week beginning- 4th December - If you have any lines in the Christmas play, please make sure that you always have your lines with you, as you will need them this week. We will be rehearsing for the Christmas play every day. 

 

Also this week, I will be holding a repeat of the parent meeting from last week on Thursday (7th)  this week at 3.30pm and again at 5pm. If you can not make it, I will send home the information. 

 

In English this week, we will be editing our campaign speeches and performing them. We will also be researching so that we can create a report about the end of the war.

I apologise for the lack of information over the last week. I had some technical issues which have now been resolved. 

 

Also, thank you for your support at the book launch last week. The children were absolutely amazing and it was lovely to celebrate all their hard work. Well done everyone! 

 

Next Thursday (7th December) I will be holding parent meetings at 3.30pm and 5pm, where you will be able to look at past SATs papers and I will go through some of the expectations on children and the maths methods that they are expected to use. There will also be a chance to ask questions, if there is anything that you want to discuss. I hope to see you there :-) (if you are attending the 5pm meeting, please use the old main entrance).

Week beginning- 13-11-17- We are starting this week with an Anti-Bullying and Yoga day on Monday. Please make sure you have a PE kit in school. We will compare Mansfield now to Mansfield in the past. 

 

In English, we will be looking at War propaganda posters and how they were used. We will also be writing descriptions. 

 

In Maths, we will look at factors, multiples and prime numbers, as well as problem solving. Well done to all the children, who are improving their arithmetic scores every week. The children should be very proud of themselves!

Welcome back after half term everyone! All the children have had a positive start back and they should be proud of what they have achieved already! Last week's arithmetic test scores were amazing and the children's diary entries as Anne Frank were sensational too. Well done all! 

 

Week commencing- 6-11-17

 

Wednesday 8-11-17- This is the day of our afternoon walk. Please bring suitable footwear that you can change into for the walk. 

During Wednesday morning, we will be watching a theatre company with the all of KS2. 

 

In Maths, we are using the long division method. We will then be using long multiplication and long division to solve problems. 

 

In English, we will be writing our own poetry. In  Grammar, we will be revisiting active and passive voice and pronouns. 

 

In Topic, we will be looking at the D-Day landings in more detail.  

Week beginning 16-10-17- Parent interviews are on Tuesday and Friday this week. Please check your bag for your time slip. Our Make Do and Mend day is on Monday, so please bring in a piece of clothing that can be recycled or you will not be able to take part in the activity. Thank you to everyone who has already brought in clothing. 

 

On Wednesday, it is the Harvest Festival. Please join us at 2pm at St Barnabus. 

 

Thursday is our whole school museum. We are dressing up as evacuees on the day, so don't forget your outfit. Parents are welcome to join us in the afternoon to see our amazing museum. 

 

Friday is our last day at school before half term. 

 

In English, we will be writing a poem based around WW2. We may also complete a reading test.  

 

In Maths, we will be solving multi step problems using addition and subtraction. 

 

At all other times, we will be preparing for our museum.

This week, we will be writing our non-fiction pieces for our book. We will also take part in a Creative day, where we will be sewing, knitting, making models, making peg dolls and rugs. Please don't forget to bring in a piece of clothing that we can cut up, sew and remake into something new. 

 

In Maths, we will be looking at addition and subtraction, involving whole numbers and decimal numbers. We will also be solving problems with addition and subtraction. 

 

In English, we will be writing our non-fiction pieces and tying up loose ends, ready for our finished pieces to be sent to the publishers. 

 

In Topic, we will take part in our Science day and our Creative day.

In English, we will be investigating what makes narrative endings effective and then writing the ending for our stories. We will then be editing our writing and typing it up, so it is ready to send to the printers. 

 

In Maths, we will be using written methods for addition and subtraction and then using these to solve problems. 

 

In Topic, we will be looking at electricity in Science and how to draw circuits using the correct symbols. We will also look at how rationing was used during WW2. 

 

PE is on Monday and Tuesday.

Well done to everyone for being fantastic when we visited Derby Museum. The children learned lots of information about WW2 and I know that they are excited to include some of this in their writing for the book. 

 

Week beginning 18th September- You will need your PE kit on Monday and Tuesday :-) We will be having a go at a Y6 standard Reading test this week too. You can do it everyone!

 

English- This week, we will be visited by Global Words, who will talk to us about how to develop a narrative. We will also be looking at a number of grammatical terms and how we can use these within our writing. 

 

Maths- We will be rounding numbers up to 10,000,000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 and 1,000,000. We will also be using our problem solving and reasoning skills. 

 

Topic- We will look at how and why the war started and what life was like once the war had begun. 

 

Please remember that home-learning needs to be handed in on Wednesday.

Well done for a fantastic start back! Everyone was brilliant last week and this showed in the amazing maths test scores that they achieved. Myself and Mrs Ferry were very impressed! 

 

Week beginning- 11-9-17-  Our trip to Derby Museum is on Thursday. Please send your slip back, if you have not already. On Tuesday, we will be visited by Globalwords, who are going to work with the children, looking at how to develop characters, to set the ball rolling for our narratives for our book. Exciting times ahead! 

 

Maths- We will be investigating place value in numbers, including millions and solving problems with numbers that have up to 7 digits 

 

English- We will begin reading 'Goodnight Mr Tom' and focusing on our grammar skills (terminology). In Reading, we will be discussing vocabulary and how we can work out meaning.

 

Topic- We will begin to think about how evacuees felt and we will create a timeline of the important events of WW2.
